The services of United Airlines were shut down to nearly 40 US states during pandemic but one of these 40 states is again going to enjoy the non-stop flights of United Airlines.
The Chicago-based airline submitted plans over the weekend to resume service to Butte, Montana, on January 3, 2025, as initially reported in Cirium schedules and subsequently verified by a spokeswoman for the carrier.
United Airlines tied up with SkyWest Airlines and it will soon operate daily flights from Denver covering the distance of 57 miles. Beyond this point, passengers can get connecting flights of United Airlines. This is quickly turning as a hub for United Airlines.
A 50-seat SkyWest aircraft but only economy cabins CRJ-200 will operate its daily flights on the newly planned route. From Denver, the flight will depart at 8:20 p.m. and will arrive at 10:24 in Butte. During the night, the carrier will stay in the Butte only, and it will again depart for Denver at 9:49 a.m. on the following day. It will be a two-hour journey from Butte to Denver.
United Airlines commenced its services in Butte in January 2022 but due to COVID-19, the services for Butte were discontinued in July 2022. It was just six months until United had to shut down from this location.
With United getting back into the game, the passengers of Butte will enjoy the flights of two airlines. Earlier, Delta was the only airline that was serving nonstop commercial flights from Butte to its hub in the Salt Lake City. SkyWest, the regional partner Delta at this location provides their flights to Delta to serve in Butte.
There is a catch as to why United Airlines is bringing their services back to Butte.
The city is a subsidized market partially funded by the Essential Air Service program of the U.S. Department of Transportation. This implies that United (as well as its rivals) are given subsidies to maintain flights that might not otherwise be profitable.
State and local officials have been advocating for a second route with more subsidies, but Butte only had one subsidized route at first (to Salt Lake City). Earlier this month, the Department of Transportation granted that extra funding and United now appears prepared to give it another go.
Earlier this month, United announced flights to Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW) in West Virginia, another subsidized airport, in addition to the new service to Butte. Starting on December 13, the airline will operate daily flights to MGW from its hub in the Washington, D.C., area.
All of these new flights join a series of network announcements by United, including its largest international expansion yet and new domestic service to places like Crested Butte, Colorado and Salt Lake City.
United Airlines had to shut down its services to almost 40 states of the United States during the pandemic, and it appears that those cuts are beginning to reverse.
While dropping the services from these cities, United gave the reason that they are short on pilots and the demand is less which were causing them a loss. With the growing demand and love for exploration among people, the aviation industry can feel more stabilized and secure, particularly when they are supportedwith subsidies.
